Naming Convention
Location Identifier: Start by including a location identifier to specify the physical or logical location of the server. This can be helpful for distributed systems or when managing servers across multiple data centres or regions. This will help as we start to deploy apps in Azure around the globe. In general, we would not be pushing servers between regions
Must follow the Alpha-2-code character as identified by https://www.iban.com/country-codes
- GB - United Kingdom of Great Britain
Environment Identifier: Add an environment identifier to differentiate between production, staging, and development environments.
- P for production
- S for staging
- D for development
- U for quality assurance
- T for testing
Service Identifier Next, include a brief identifier indicating the primary service of the server.
- DYM for DYMENSiON’s
- VEM for Veeam
Function Identifier: Next, include a brief identifier indicating the primary function or the server.
- WEB for web servers
- DB for database servers
- APP for applications
- DNS for DNS Servers
Sequential Number: Assign a unique sequential number to each server within the same function and environment. This helps identify individual servers within a cluster or group.
